I’m a big fan of the kind of DIY home improvement ideas that don’t require calling a contractor or tearing apart your entire living room…

Sometimes all it takes is a few small upgrades to completely transform a space (like my DIY ceiling-mounted barn door)—and best of all, you can knock them out over a weekend with just a bit of planning and effort. The best part? You can boost your home's resale value while making the space feel more like you with DIY projects that are simple, affordable, and totally doable.

These are projects I’ve either tackled myself or helped friends with, and I can say with confidence that they’re not just easy—they also pack a big punch. From swapping out hardware to adding energy-efficient touches, every item on this list can be completed in a day or two, and you don’t need a fully stocked workshop to make it happen!

Peel-and-Stick Backsplash Installation

One of the easiest DIY home improvement ideas is to give your kitchen or bathroom a fresh look is with a peel-and-stick backsplash. These adhesive tiles mimic the look of ceramic or glass without the mess, cost, or skill level required to install the real thing.

I love these because they’re renter-friendly and easy to remove if you change your mind later. Most options are water-resistant and heat-safe, too, which makes them perfect for behind sinks or stoves. All you need is a level, a utility knife or scissors, and a bit of patience to line things up right.

BEWARE: Clean the wall surface thoroughly. Preparation in this case is paramount. Otherwise, your peel-and-stick backsplash won’t do much sticking. Once the wall is prepped, peel the backing off the tile, and stick it in place, being sure to apply firm pressure across the tile to ensure adhesion. Within a few hours, you’ve got a backsplash that looks professionally installed—and if you ask me, that’s time very well spent!

Upgrade Cabinet Hardware

This one’s probably the fastest makeover on the list. Swapping out old cabinet knobs and drawer pulls for something more modern can instantly refresh the entire room. It’s amazing how a $30 hardware upgrade can make your kitchen or bathroom feel brand new.

Most hardware is standardized in size, so it's easy to match your new pieces with the holes already drilled into your cabinets. I recommend taking one of your current handles to the store for a perfect match, or order online using the same measurements.

All you need is a screwdriver and maybe a drill if you're changing the hole placement. Just be sure to keep the screws organized so you don’t mix them up mid-project!

Install Smart Thermostat

This is a favorite of my DIY home improvement ideas…

If you haven’t made the leap to a smart thermostat yet, now’s the perfect time. Not only do these devices look sleek on your wall, but they also help reduce energy bills and increase your home’s value.

I have a smart thermostat on my gas fireplace in my living room. The installation took less than an hour, and now I have a more efficient and convenient way of setting the temperature. Just make sure to turn off the power to your HVAC system before you begin. Most smart thermostats have an app-based setup that walks you through every step, and most models are designed for DIY installation.

The ability to control the temperature from your phone—and have it learn your habits—is something you won’t realize you needed until you have it. Total game-changer!

Paint an Accent Wall

Painting an entire room can feel daunting, but painting just one wall? That’s manageable—and fun. Accent walls are a great way to add color and personality without overwhelming a space.

Pick a wall that naturally draws attention—maybe behind the bed or couch—and go bold with a rich color. The deep navy accent wall in the image above really pops against the white walls and ceiling. One gallon of paint usually does the trick, and you can knock this out in a few hours.

My advice? Don’t skip the prep work! Tape off the edges, lay down a drop cloth, and take your time with the roller. You’ll thank yourself later when your lines are crisp and clean.

Swap Out Light Fixtures

Replacing a dated or boring light fixture can totally change the feel of a room. Whether it’s a sleek pendant over the kitchen island or a statement chandelier in the entryway, lighting is one of the most underrated upgrades out there.

Most fixtures come with straightforward instructions, and as long as you turn off the power at the breaker box, it’s a safe and manageable job. I have replaced every light fixture in my house, and it’s amazing how much new lighting can make each space feel different afterward.

Be sure to choose a fixture that fits the room’s scale and matches your existing decor. It’s a fun way to inject some personality into your home. But if you aren’t confident working with electricity, hire an electrician and focus on less technical DIY home improvement ideas.

Add a Floating Shelf or Two

Floating shelves are equal parts form and function. They’re perfect for displaying decor, storing everyday items, or just adding visual interest to an empty wall.

I’ve installed these in bathrooms, kitchens, and even bedrooms. The key is finding the studs (use a stud finder if you have one) and making sure the shelves are level before you drill. Many kits come with everything you need, including hardware and instructions.

The best part is how customizable they are. You can stain or paint them to match your space, and you’ll get that built-in look without the custom cabinetry price tag.

Apply Caulk in Kitchen or Bath

Old, cracked caulk not only looks bad, but it can also let in moisture and lead to mildew. Re-caulking your tub, sink, or backsplash is one of those unglamorous but seriously valuable DIY jobs.

All you need is a utility knife to remove the old caulk, a caulk gun, and the right type of caulk for your surface (usually silicone or latex). Smooth it out with your finger or a finishing tool, and let it dry according to the instructions.

This is one of my yearly DIY home improvement ideas as part of my larger home maintenance schedule. It keeps things looking fresh and protects my home from water damage.

Install a New Bathroom Mirror

A new mirror can completely change the look and feel of your bathroom. Think clean lines, LED backlighting, or even anti-fog features for a high-end touch.

Replacing a mirror is usually a matter of unscrewing the old one and mounting the new one using brackets or adhesive, depending on the model. Just make sure you measure correctly and check for level before committing.

I actually built a DIY frame and bought a standard-sized mirror for my bathroom, and it instantly elevated the space. It’s like the bathroom grew up overnight!

Update Light Switch Plates and Outlet Covers

This is probably the easiest DIY home improvement idea on the list, but it makes a surprising impact. Swapping out old, dirty switch plates and outlet covers for clean, modern ones adds polish to any room.

I like going with crisp white for a modern look, but even beige ones can do wonders for a space if they’re new. Obviously, it’s important to match the color of the new plates and switch covers to the color of the outlets and switches. Just unscrew the old covers and replace them. You’ll be done in minutes!

It’s a small detail, but details matter—especially when you’re trying to create a cohesive, intentional-looking home.

Add Weatherstripping to Doors and Windows

Apart from replacing windows or upgrading doors, sealing up drafts is one of the best ways to make your home more energy-efficient, and it’s super easy to do. Weatherstripping comes in a variety of forms—foam tape, door sweeps, V-strip—and most install with adhesive or a few small screws.

I did this on my front and back doors, and the difference in comfort and energy bills was noticeable right away. Plus, no more chilly breezes sneaking in during the winter.

This upgrade doesn’t look flashy, but it adds value and comfort. And trust me, your HVAC system will thank you.
